Barbara
Enright
What were you doing at the age of four?
Well, Barbara Enright, at four, was already
playing poker with her older brother and
frequently winning over him. In 1976,
Barbara started playing in poker rooms
and, today, she is considered one of the
fearless players on the circuit and plays
limit hold’em the best.
Barbara is one of the all-time greats
in the game of poker, perhaps, because
she plays the game with such a passion.
She was inspired by the book Quit Work,
Play Poker and Sleep Till Noon and started
winning consistently.
She is the only woman player ever to
reach the championship final table of
World Series of Poker. In the 17th World
Series of Poker in 1986, she played for
the first time in WSOP and won $16,400.
This was her first WSOP bracelet, which
was followed by another two in this series
in 1994 and 1996. She is also the first
two-time champion, and first to win a
major tournament paying more than $100,000.
Also, she found her place in the Poker
Hall of Fame.
Many of her unfortunate opponents think
she is just lucky; but anyone who watches
her game and sees her speed and strategy,
will know that luck is not all that this
lady has got. Nevertheless, Barbara says
that female players have a vantage point
in that they have more sixth sense and
intuitiveness. Male players! Beware.
Of course, this sense of intuitiveness
shows in her games as aggressiveness and
pressure-building techniques, which most
players are cautious about.
Barbara is also an accomplished writer,
her funny anecdotes being most recognized.
After being such a relentless player on
the circuit, now is named the Editor-in-Chief
of the woman’s poker magazine: Woman
Poker Player. She was also hired as Technical
Advisor for National Lampoon’s Strip
Poker filmed in Jamaica.
All male players, (if you were upset
about her statement about extra senses)
be advised that she is a motivational
speaker, too!
